On November 11, 2009, Jean-Victor Nkolo, spokesman for the President of the United Nations General Assembly, said that the 64th Session of the General Assembly had adopted a resolution to mark the birthday of Nelson Mandela, the former President of South Africa, on July 18, 2010 as the "Mandela International Day" in recognition of his contribution to peace and freedom.
The General Assembly resolution endorsed Nelson Mandela's values and contributions to human society in the areas of conflict resolution, racial relations, promotion and protection of human rights, reconciliation, gender equality, the rights of children and other vulnerable groups, and the improvement of poor and underdeveloped communities. The Assembly also recognized his contribution to the international struggle for democracy and to the promotion of a culture of peace around the world.
